Behavioural Requirements & Preschool Behaviour Rubric

What if my child is not able to meet behavioural requirements?

Many of the behaviour guidance strategies in our classes are invisible. As a parent you can expect to see the following programming strategies that support positive, age-appropriate behaviour in all of our classes:

  • increased active movement and decreased sitting or stationary work

  • a steady and even pace to activities

  • the use of age appropriate transitions (familiar songs, physical movements and phrases)

  • the use of repetition and routines

  • instructions that are age appropriate to avoid frustration

We have based our program expectations on Canadian Pediatric Guidelines and after years of experience working with thousands of preschool aged athletes we feel they are reasonable and achievable for most children. We will always provide reasonable guidance and instruction to help our athletes learn the behavioural skills needed to thrive in our classes. However, we do recognize that some children may not be able to meet the expectations and therefore may not be able to safely participate in our programs. In many cases, our team can work with you to support your child by:

  • finding a more suitable class time that may better support your child

  • moving your child to a more suitable level or program

  • supporting you to find community resources that will further support your child (such as Kids Physio Group)

If we deem none of these options are appropriate, Jump Gymnastics reserves the right to request removal from the program until your child is ready to participate safely.

As a parent, what should I do?

  • arrange a time to talk to the coach before or after class - email admin or General Manager to set up a time

  • openly discuss your child and their behaviour - our coaches are here to help not judge

  • work with the coach to develop their Individual Lesson Card personal goals in order to help your child learn the expectations for the class

  • love your child - sometimes this environment is just not a fit for them and that’s ok

  • remember that timing is everything and all children grow at different rates - your child just might not be ready right now.
